Media Center Materials Weeding Policy

In order to maintain a collection of materials within the framework of the philosophy of the Lampeter-Strasburg School district selection procedure and within the physical restraints of the school media center, the following criteria for maintaining the collection has been established.

Definition: Weeding is the process of withdrawing materials from the collection that are no longer suitable for use. It is a continuous process; however, special attention is given during the annual inventory. Weeding is completed by the library staff with the help of school faculty who are consulted as needed.

Weeding criteria:

  • Poor physical condition and repair/mending would be futile.
  • Content is inaccurate, obsolete, or misleading.
  • Material has been superseded by new or revised material.
  • Material has not circulated within a selected time period.
  • Duplicates whose material is no longer in demand.
  • Material may no longer reflect the curriculum.
